Once you have decided to obtain a credit card you need to be aware of a number of things so you can get the credit card that meets your needs. You will first be struck by the sheer number of credit cards that are available to apply for. You can find all sorts of credit cards from ones that give you cash back, or rewards or even cards that charge you no interest. Do your research and compare the cards that are available so you can find the best card for you.
The first question you should ask yourself is how often you will be using your card. Will you use the card all of the time or will you use the card for “emergency” type of expenses? If you use the card a lot, you will want a card that gives you rewards. These rewards can be membership into certain book clubs or discounts on certain purchases. Also, these rewards can be things such as credit monitoring services or as simple as getting a percentage of all dollars charged as cash back which is then applied to your balance.
Airline cards may be another choice for you as well. If you travel by airplane alot, you will want to check out the available air miles rewards cards. These cards give you, as a reward for using them, one air mile for every dollar you charge to the card. The air miles can then be redeemed to reduce the price of, or completely pay for, a future airline ticket with the same airline.
High interest cards should be avoided at all costs if you are someone who does not plan on paying off the balance in full each month. If you do plan on carrying a balance forward, you will want a low interest credit card. Many credit card issuers also offer zero percent balance transfer cards. This means you can transfer your balance from your high cards to a zero APR card and pay off the balance much quicker because of the lack of interest added to the balance each month.
Some cards charge an annual fee as a result of giving their members so many perks. The fee is supposed to cover this cost and is spread out amongst all of the card holders. This once a year fee is in addition to the interest that is charged on the balances of each card every month. If the fee is not something you wish to pay, you can always go with a card that does not charge one. There are plenty of cards that offer many perks but do not charge annual fees.
Keep doing your research until you find the card that best suits your particular spending habits and your financial discipline. By taking the time to get the right card for you, you will save yourself a lot of money and stress in the future.
